About FOSTEL
This year will be the fourth edition of FOSTEL - for the past three years, the summit has been organised by the German Unix Users Group (GUUG). This year, the event broadens its scope beyond telephony, to include any type of real-time rich collaboration over the internet. This includes VoIP, telephony, instant messaging, and other collaborative applications such as gobby, AbiCollab and Inkboard.
The Summit has the following goals:
- Collaboration
- Free software projects in Communication over IP have lots in common. Many applications use the same frameworks, different projects implement the same protocols slightly differently, or have diverging goals. Bringing these projects together gives us the opportunity to concentrate on what we have in common, on interoperability, on the use of open standards, and on areas where collaboration is possible.
- Communication
- Even if projects are not in a position to collaborate, there is value in creating communication channels between the projects.
- Community
- By definition, Communication over IP is all about bringing people together - allowing the creation of communities with tools more advanced than plain text. This summit is above all an opportunity for projects involved in the area of CoIP to come together, meet, exchange stories, strike up new friendships.
